Writing And Publishing
The Short Stuff
(Especially For Moms!)
With Christina Katz
Author of
Writer Mama, How To
Raise A Writing Career Alongside Your Kids
This course is currently closed; new dates to
be announced soon!
Finally, a writing workshop that fits into the busy lives of moms! The focus is
on getting you into print sooner, rather than later, and without pulling
all-nighters or paying a fortune in babysitter fees. You will learn how to write
short, easy-to-write articles so that you will have an easier time working your
way up to longer, more time-consuming articles (like features and profiles)
LATER. You will try your pen at tips, fillers, short interviews, list articles,
how-to's, and the short personal essays-- all within the six weeks. You will have
the benefit of reading and learning from your classmates’ efforts. Opportunities
for self-assessment and self-reflection are woven into the class. Those who
register expecting to write as much as their schedules allow, will benefit most
out of the class.
Christina Katz has been putting writers through the writing paces since 2001. By
starting SHORT, you will learn to identify multiple possibilities for your
material that will strengthen your freelancer’s eye in the long run. The basic
short cover letter will be taught as a way to initially submit your work. Two
detailed reviews of your drafts-in-progress are included at weeks three and six
(you choose one of your pieces for an instructor critique each time). The best
way to prove you can make money writing is to start writing with publication in
mind! There is much to be learned in this class that serves as a solid
foundation for future writing and marketing classes.
Busy dads and non-parents are also welcome, but should expect that the course is
designed to address and overcome the challenges busy moms face. Non-moms are
expected to adapt the language of the class to suit themselves.
Personal attention from the instructor is offered during the week three and six
critiques and throughout the class in the form of questions answered for the
entire class. Because of the high volume of productivity in this class, the
instructor does not critique each and every student submission. Each participant
commits to participating as fully as their schedule allows.
The Absolute Classes “open enrollment model” does not apply. Classes are six
weeks and start and end on the dates below. The Absolute Classes “tutorial option” is not available.
Duration: Six lessons with six assignments
in six weeks
Course Dates: This
course is currently closed; new dates to be announced soon.
Prerequisites: N/A
Class Limit: 20 students
Cost: $175
Class Materials: Will be provided by
instructor via e-mail on start date of class. Students will provide a jpg
photo/headshot and a one-paragraph intro of who you are as a writer the week
prior to the class start date (voluntary but fun way to “meet” your classmates).
About Christina Katz:
Christina Katz is the author of
Writer Mama, How
To Raise A Writing Career Alongside Your Kids (March 2007, Writer’s
Digest Books). She has been doing just that for the past four and a half years
and has published more than 200 articles in magazines, newspapers, and online
publications. She teaches eight nonfiction-writing classes a year and is
publisher and editor of the online monthly zine, Writers On The Rise, voted by
Writer’s Digest one of the “101 Top Web Sites” for writers.
Christina says:
“I have noticed that finding time to write is a
particular problem for busy moms. Since I am a mom myself and just finished
Writer Mama for Writer’s Digest Books, I am in a unique position to address
the specific challenges moms face when beginning a part-time freelance career
(or even just test-driving one). I am here to tell moms, ‘You can do this! You
can grow a writing career alongside your kids if you just start at the beginning
and work consistently over time, no matter how little time you have in the
beginning.’ I hope you will join us, I think you will surprise yourself (and
possibly your family and friends too).”
