In
response to many requests, here is the nonfiction course that you need
if you want to succeed!
Nonfiction
writing is always in demand. Yet so many freelance writers fail simply
because they overlook the basics. Trying to publish stale ideas or
poorly thought out articles, these writers collect only rejection slips,
rather than paychecks.
Yet
many editors need and want nonfiction articles from freelance writers.
This course is designed to teach you and develop the skills you need –
from how to research, interview, and assemble your article into a
saleable piece of writing. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You must
work hard – and that includes writing consistently if you hope to be a
successful nonfiction freelance writer.
If
you are not willing to work – and that includes lots of writing –
then this course is not for you. But if you have the desire to start
selling nonfiction writing – repeatedly and consistently, this course
is for you.
This
8-week course is full of strategies, tips, and advice to help you work
like a nonfiction writer. You will learn to develop your writing skills,
learn how to self-edit, write stronger, conduct unpublished research,
interview, provide photos, and much more! You will learn how to develop
into such a good nonfiction freelance writer that editors will be asking
you for more of your writing. You will learn how to create nonfiction
articles that will guarantee continued success as a freelance writer.
Course Type:
One-on-one,
individualized workshop.
Objective:
Writers
who complete this course will know how to create saleable manuscripts,
from an idea into a complete manuscript. They will learn how to work
with sources, PR agencies, and experts. They will learn what editors
want and how to get them to call you with your next assignment.
By
the time you have completed this course, if you have kept up your
assignments, made the necessary adjustments, and paid attention to your
instructor’s feedback, you will be ready to create saleable
manuscripts and make submissions to various nonfiction editors.
Turning
you into a nonfiction freelance writer takes long hours of tough work.
This will be an intense "working" class and participants are
warned not to sign up for this class if they are not prepared to spend
significant time researching, working, writing, re-writing, and editing.
Throughout this course, your instructor will lecture, provide handouts
as warranted, give assignments, and evaluate the student’s work.

WEEK ONE
Getting Started as a Nonfiction Writer --
In this class, you are introduced to nonfiction writing. After a brief
introduction, you will learn where you, as a nonfiction writer, can
easily fit into the world of nonfiction writing and information. You
will learn about news writing, and why you must work with the latest
information, not the outdated or stale information. You will start to
learn the importance of slanting your approach and developing angles for
your writing. You will also receive your first nonfiction writing
assignment.
WEEK TWO
Structuring A Manuscript - In this class,
your instructor will share ideas on how to create an article. From idea
to concept, you will apply a slant – in a step-by-step format, and you
will learn the formula of how to assemble a nonfiction manuscript. You
will also learn about the many common types of stories. But most
importantly, you will learn how to structure a nonfiction story into a
saleable format.
WEEK THREE
Developing Sources & Resources – In
this class, you will learn how to search for new ideas and trends. You
will learn how to spot news, and how further to develop ideas into
saleable manuscripts. You will learn how to get press kits, press
releases, and work with public relations people to get inside
information and special press access. You will learn where to generate
ideas, and how to refine them.
WEEK FOUR
Photography and Artwork In this class,
your instructor will be showing you how to make more money by providing
photography and artwork with your manuscript. This week you will also
review “good” and “bad” photographs, and begin to develop an eye
for marketable artwork and photography that can insure your manuscript
will be sold. You will also learn how to get photographs for editorial
use that you did not take yourself.
WEEK FIVE
Interviewing -- In this class, you will
learn how to conduct interviews – both in person and on the telephone.
Your instructor will be presenting a lot of information about how to get
interviews, what to ask, and how to ask it. You will learn the tricks of
the trade, and even learn how to “lift” quotes from other resources,
including TV and radio. You will learn about your tools, preparing
questions, and much more this week.
WEEK SIX
Selling your Work -- In this class, your
instructor will show you how to develop a basic marketing plan and how
to sell your work. You will learn about preparing effective query
letters. Not only will you learn what to say, but you will learn what to
never put into a query letter. You will learn how to write basic query
letters, step-by-step.
WEEK SEVEN
Basic Editing -- In this class, your
instructor will guide you through basic editing techniques, and you will
start to develop editing skills. You will learn how to edit your own
work, making it better, clearer, and highly marketable. You will learn
how to proofread properly, and how to critique your own work.
WEEK EIGHT
Reselling Your Writing -- In this class,
your course concludes, but this last class is as important as any you
have taken. Your instructor will be presenting information about how you
can sell, resell, and resell your writing, many times over. As the
course concludes, your instructor will provide you with a list of things
you can do to make yourself a better nonfiction writer.
